The more you know about the Earth, the more fascinating it becomes. And, of course, what can be better than a trip to its center? This is exactly what Jules Verne offers in his novel Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Written in 1864, this novel takes you on an epic journey through bumps and crevices of the Earth's surface until finally reaching its deepest part. A true classic of science fiction literature that has influenced many other stories since then. Journey To The Center Of The Earth is a novel of adventure and imagination, set in the nineteenth century. It takes you on a journey to the Earth's innermost depths, where the mysterious, prehistoric and legendary subterranean race of shape-shifting creatures dwells. This novel is also known as Via Oceano. This book has been called 'perhaps [Verne's] most enduring work' by classic scholar Martin Gardner in the article “The Journey to the Center of Jules Verne’s Earth” published in Explorations into Science Fiction October 1961 issue. Verne's classic is about a professor and his nephew who set out on an expedition to find and explore the center of the Earth. The main character, Professor Lidenbrock, has calculated that the center of the Earth lies in Iceland. While other scientists doubt this, he decides to travel to there, accompanied by his nephew Axel. The trip will be long and hard as it includes crossing two sea-lakes and a lava desert as well as descending through a chasm which requires special equipment such as breathing masks and diving suits. The first sea they cross is the Sea of Soundings which according to Verne lies 5 miles under sea level. It is a totally dark, soundless sea. The second sea they have to cross is the Sea of Rains. It is also dark and very hot. In this sea Axel finds a bottle containing a message from a man named Aron Lidenbrock who was a professor like him and his great-great-grandfather too on his mother's side. This message gives Axel the confidence to continue with the journey as he realizes that Aron had also been searching for the center of the Earth and had traveled across this ocean as well as another one which was yet to come after it i.e. The Black Sea. In this sea the travelers face a terrible danger as they are almost drowned in an underground whirlpool. After this, they reach a barren land of black sand and stones which has taken away all sign of life from the Earth. They measure the depth of this desert at a point where a violent underground storm strikes. The storm is so strong that it damages their equipment and throws Axel against a rock, making him lose consciousness for some time. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself inside a cave with strange drawings on its walls which show him what has been happening to them all along during their journey i.e. cfa1e77820
