Writing a kickass blog post is a lot more complicated than it might seem. It's not just about coming up with a good headline and some valuable content—you've got to make sure it all reads well together, too! That's why we've created this list of back-to-basics rules for making your blog shine. 1. Make it readable 2. Make it valuable 3. Get started quickly and clearly 4. Include lots of pictures or videos to show what you're talking about, or links that take the reader to an outside site where they can see the images/videos in context 5. Make it personal or conversational 6. Use sidebars as a way to break up the vertical stacking of content. 7. Add a call to action at the end of each post—let visitors know what you want them to do right now 8. Be consistent with your language and tone—keep the same voice through all of your content, and choose a voice that's appropriate for your website's industry and audience 9. Use a blogroll so readers can easily discover other blogs they might be interested in following or reading more from your blog 10. Don't use flash for anything other than videos 11. Quote another source in your blog, rather than writing it verbatim, or paraphrasing 12. Use images that are both relevant and interesting to the topic at hand 13. Get feedback on your work from others in advance of posting—other eyes can pick up on things you might have missed! 14. Split up the text in your blog into series of posts that build on each other in some way, or that develop over time 18. Put dates in the dates of your posts to make them easier for readers to find (if they've found you!) 19. Add links to your RSS feed so readers can subscribe to get new content each day, or whenever it becomes available 20. Tag topics so readers can easily find similar blogs on your site—as well as tags for specific types of content, so they can quickly sort through the links you've given them about related topics 21. Write about related topics that readers might be interested in, so you give them a reason to look for content on your website 22. Make a schedule of posts ahead of time, and stick to it—just because new content is coming doesn't mean you have to wait until it's ready 23.
